The Risepoint student retention team works closely with students at our partner universities, helping them navigate the administrative side of education – when to register for the next term, how to arrange their schedule around work and personal obligations, how to purchase textbooks – so they stay on track with their program and move closer to graduation day.
From the outside, the support that our specialists offer students appears as everyday moments – an introductory call, an email follow-up, or assistance with a registration question. Sometimes, those everyday moments become part of a student story in a way that feels uniquely special.
For Oscar Macias, a Senior Student Retention Specialist who has been with Risepoint for almost 15 years, that special moment came when he had the opportunity to attend Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi’s commencement ceremony to celebrate two students he supported: Ethan Galvan and Melissa Lopez.
While every student has a different academic journey, the compassion Oscar shows always remains consistent. Oscar truly feels his role is to help students move from course to course, supporting them as they balance school and life in a way that honors their reality, but also helps them stay on track to completion.
Ethan Galvan, who completed his Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance, has a journey that is similar to many other online students. While earning his degree, Ethan balanced a full-time job, work travel, and family responsibilities.
Oscar supported him by checking in regularly, offering suggestions on how to adjust his course schedule when needed, and encouraging Ethan to prioritize balance as he progressed through his program successfully.
Melissa Lopez, who completed her Master of Business Administration with a concentration in Business Analytics, began her program feeling nervous and unsure of herself. Oscar checked in with her regularly, helping her feel comfortable, confident, and supported through her program.
Melissa’s academic journey also included significant personal challenges, including the loss of several family members and a cancer diagnosis that required her to temporarily step away from her program. Through it all, Oscar offered encouragement and care when she needed it most.
“You supported me not only as a student, but as a person,” Melissa shared. “Your compassion, consistency, and genuine care made all the difference.”
For Melissa, Oscar’s support went far beyond academic guidance. His encouragement helped her continue moving forward during some of the most difficult moments in her life.

At commencement, Oscar was able to see and feel the impact of his support. The excitement in the room, the students walking across the stage, and the families celebrating made the experience truly special.
One message from the commencement speaker stayed with him: “Remember your village.” For Oscar, this message resonated deeply. He knew he had played a meaningful role in helping these students reach this moment.
Each student thanked him, hugged him, and introduced him to their families. They also had the chance to meet one another, creating an instant connection through the person who had supported them throughout their programs.
For Oscar, this experience reinforced why he loves his job and what we do at Risepoint. He sees each student as a whole person and works to tailor his support to match their needs. To watch them walk across the stage, hear their gratitude, and meet their families reminded Oscar how impactful his role can be.
Students need people who can help them navigate academic and personal challenges that come along the way. And moments like this show how meaningful that support can be, from the first conversation to commencement day.
